Guardian Pro: the Form 8949 worksheet

The free checker finds wash sales across all your accounts. Guardian Pro turns them into a Form 8949 worksheet for one tax year: each sale lined up with what your 1099-B likely shows, the adjustments your broker likely won't make (codes B, T and W with the column (g) amounts), a CSV of every line, and a printable copy for you or your tax preparer. It runs in your browser like the free checker: your trades never leave it.

What you get

For each tax year you unlock, the worksheet in the app shows, for your taxable accounts:

  • Adjustment cards for the sales your 1099-B likely reports differently: the figures the sale should read, and its Form 8949 row.
  • Lines to check with a CPA, each with the reason.
  • Wash sales likely already on your 1099-B (box 1g), to tick off.
  • Form 8949 totals for each account and box.
  • Shares you still hold whose cost basis or holding period differs from what your broker likely has, for when you sell them.
  • A CSV of every line.
  • Print or save as PDF, for your records or your tax preparer.
  • A quick start for doing it yourself, from your 1099-B to the corrected figures.

It is not a Form 8949 and not tax advice. How the worksheet works is on the methodology page.

A sample

Two cards from the worksheet, for two made-up trades. The full worksheet also has the summary, the Form 8949 totals, every line, the CSV and the print view.

SAMPLE: made-up trades, not your data

The made-up trades (tax year 2026, two taxable accounts):

  • “Broker A”: bought 100 XYZ on 2026-01-05 for $5,000.00; sold them on 2026-03-02 for $4,000.00.
  • “Broker B”: bought 100 XYZ on 2026-03-10 for $4,200.00; sold them on 2026-06-01 for $4,500.00.

Each broker sees only its own account, so neither 1099-B likely shows the wash sale between them. The worksheet lines up both sales:

Adjustments your 1099-B likely won't make

  1. L1 XYZ · 100 sold 2026-03-02 in “Broker A”

Your 1099-B likely shows: proceeds $4,000.00, cost basis $5,000.00, wash sale loss disallowed $0.00, short-term.

Across all your accounts: proceeds $4,000.00, cost basis $5,000.00, wash sale loss disallowed $1,000.00, short-term, gain or loss $0.00; holding period from 2026-01-05.

Corrected figures: cost basis $5,000.00, wash sale loss disallowed $1,000.00, short-term.

In tax software, don't overwrite the proceeds or cost basis your 1099-B shows; use its fields for the wash sale loss disallowed ($1,000.00), and choose short-term. Software differs, so check that the Form 8949 row it produces matches the one below.

    On Form 8949, Part I, box A: (d) 4,000.00 · (e) 5,000.00 · (f) W · (g) 1,000.00 · (h) 0.00. This row assumes your 1099-B shows the expected figures above.

    Why:

    • 100 XYZ bought in “Broker B” on 2026-03-10 (8 days after this sale) replace this loss: a wash sale across accounts. “Broker A” only has to report wash sales within the same account (Treas. Reg. §1.6045-1(d)(6)(iii)), so its 1099-B likely leaves this one out. The disallowed loss is added to the basis of those shares (IRC §1091(d)); see line L2.
  2. L2 XYZ · 100 sold 2026-06-01 in “Broker B”

Your 1099-B likely shows: proceeds $4,500.00, cost basis $4,200.00, wash sale loss disallowed $0.00, short-term.

Across all your accounts: proceeds $4,500.00, cost basis $5,200.00, wash sale loss disallowed $0.00, short-term, gain or loss −$700.00; holding period from 2026-01-13.

Corrected figures: cost basis $5,200.00, wash sale loss disallowed $0.00, short-term.

In tax software, don't overwrite the proceeds or cost basis your 1099-B shows; use its fields for a corrected cost basis ($5,200.00), and choose short-term. Software differs, so check that the Form 8949 row it produces matches the one below.

    On Form 8949, Part I, box A: (d) 4,500.00 · (e) 4,200.00 · (f) B · (g) (1,000.00) · (h) (700.00). This row assumes your 1099-B shows the expected figures above.

    Why:

    • Across all your accounts these shares replaced the loss on XYZ sold 2026-03-02 in “Broker A”, so that disallowed loss belongs in their basis (IRC §1091(d)). “Broker B” can't see that sale. Net: the correct basis is $1,000.00 higher than your 1099-B likely shows.
SAMPLE: made-up trades, not your data. Two cards of the 2026 worksheet, word for word as the app prints them for these trades. Not tax advice.

How you get it

You pay on Stripe's checkout page. Guardian Pro is sold through Link, a Stripe affiliate (Sold through Link, LLC): Link is the merchant of record, charges your payment method, adds any sales tax it calculates, and emails your receipt. We never see your card number. On a card statement, the charge shows as LINK.COM* WSGUARDIAN, though some banks display it differently.

Stripe chooses which payment methods checkout offers: cards, and depending on your device and location, others such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or Cash App Pay. Outside the US, checkout may show the price in your own currency.

Right after you pay, checkout sends you back to this site, which shows your license key. Copy it or download it: you can paste it into any browser to unlock Guardian Pro there.

Refunds

Full refund within 30 days of purchase: email hello@washsaleguardian.com. A refund ends the license.

Link can also refund you under its own refund policy, within 60 days of payment: for example if you didn't receive your license key, or the payment wasn't authorized.

The full terms of sale and refund policy are one page.

What the license sends

Your license key stays in your browser. When you're online, the app sends its license ID to our server when you paste the key in, and after that when you open the app or /unlock once this browser hasn't checked it for 30 days. Our server asks Stripe whether the payment was refunded or reversed. Nothing else, never your trades. Details are on the privacy page.

Questions

Does Guardian Pro upload my trades?
No. The worksheet is computed in your browser, the same way as the free checker, and your trades never leave it. The only thing the license sends is its license ID, as described above.
Which tax years does a license cover?
The tax year it names. The tax year on sale is 2026: a license for tax year 2026 unlocks the 2026 worksheet, and other years stay locked.
Can I use it on another computer?
Yes. Open washsaleguardian.com/unlock there and paste your license key. Your trades are stored only in the browser you imported them in, so import them there too.
I lost my license key.
In a browser where you unlocked Guardian Pro, open washsaleguardian.com/unlock: it shows the key again. Otherwise, email hello@washsaleguardian.com and we'll send your key to the email address on your order.
Is it a subscription?
No. You pay once for a tax year, and nothing renews. A license for another tax year is a separate purchase.
Is it tax advice?
No. Wash-Sale Guardian is an informational tool: it conservatively flags likely wash-sale situations from data you provide, in your browser. Check the worksheet with a tax professional before you file.
Can I buy it from outside the US?
Yes. Guardian Pro is for US federal tax returns only, so it's for you if you file one, including as an American living abroad. Checkout adds any sales tax or VAT Link calculates for your address, and may show the price in your own currency.
Why does checkout say "Sold through Link"?
Link, a Stripe affiliate, is the merchant of record for the sale: it charges you, adds any sales tax it calculates and emails your receipt. On a card statement, the charge shows as LINK.COM* WSGUARDIAN, though some banks display it differently. We still provide Guardian Pro and its license key. For anything about the charge, email hello@washsaleguardian.com or contact Link support.

The checker itself stays free: check your trades, no signup.
